Position:   The Virginia Historical Society seeks a qualified candidate for the position of cataloging librarian.  This position serves as the lead cataloger for published materials housed in the collections of the Virginia Historical Society.  Catalogs all published materials including monographs, serials, sheet music and broadsides ; maintains local authority file, maintains shelf list files, revises online catalog as needed and assists in clean-up of the STAR/Client database; serves as the primary point person for retrospective conversion and trains staff in the creation of cataloging records for the online public access catalog.

Duties and Responsibilities:  Performs original and copy cataloging of published materials producing MARC records AACR2, MARC21, RDA rules and LC authorities.  Maintains the VHS authority file and creates authority file records as needed.  Makes corrections in the STAR database when the loading of these records creates a conflict in the database.  Maintains the shelflist and resolves any conflicts that occur in the assignment of classification numbers.  Makes corrections in the online catalog that are discovered by the VHS staff and library users.   Works closely with the Cataloging Library Assistant using MarcEdit to make massive changes in cataloging data.  Serves as the primary point person in retrospective conversion by upgrading “old” STAR records and creating data for materials which were missed in the initial crossload which created the online catalog.  Trains clerical and paraprofessional staff in the creation of specialized cataloging records to provide access to materials in the vertical file and biographical sketches.    Assists in special projects as assigned, including the cataloging of CMLS published materials being transferred to the Virginia Historical Society.  Serves on the Saturday rotation in the reading room and provides assistance during the week on an as needed basis.

Qualifications:  A master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program is required.  Knowledge of basic elements of bibliographic control; experience with both copy and original cataloging and authority file maintenance.  Experience with rare book cataloging. Strong service orientation. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff at all levels and library patrons. Initiative, flexibility, and the potential to excel in a rapidly changing environment.  Knowledge of and ability to apply standard MARC21 based cataloging and descriptive practices, including the creation of specialized cataloging records for a research clientele; ability to prioritize tasks and coordinate workflows; experience using OCLC and its specialized functions such as macros and  MarcEdit.
