Docent and Volunteer Program

Volunteering at the Virginia Historical Society is a great way to learn more about history while helping to preserve the past. Meeting new people, learning and sharing information, and making a real contribution to the society are just a few of the benefits volunteers can receive for their time and effort.

Volunteer positions are open to all individuals who meet the qualifications outlined below, without regard to race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age, or disability.

The Virginia Historical Society does not accept court-mandated volunteers.

  • Volunteers must be friendly, outgoing, enjoy working with the public, and have an interest in Virginia history.

  • Volunteers can work with visitors or behind the scenes.

  • All volunteer opportunities are available Monday through Friday between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

  • Volunteers work at the Virginia Historical Society and Virginia House.

Are you looking for an internship position? Whether you are interested in museum collections, public relations, or education, the Virginia Historical Society is a great place to learn about the different skills necessary to work in a museum. All interns must be at least eighteen years old.  Intenship applications require a cover letter and resume. In order to qualify for a PAID internship you must be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate school.

Fall Semester 2017 Internships:

Please fill out the internship application form and submit any additional paperwork required by the job posting.

Unless otherwise noted, applications will be accepted for these positions through August 18, 2017.

Bobby Chandler Internship

The Bobby Chandler Internship program is generously supported by the Kip Kephart Foundation. Bobby Chandler Interns are responsible for leading tours of the VHS long-term exhibition, The Story of Virginia, conducting hands-on workshops for students in the Bluford Classroom and assisting the Educational Services staff with programs for audiences of all ages.

The internship spans two semesters: the fall semester of the internship is unpaid but carries academic credit; during the spring semester a $1,000 stipend is paid out on an hourly basis. Participants must commit to both semesters to be considered for the internship, and they must be available during weekday mornings in the spring. Applicants must be over eighteen, actively enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a college or university, and have access to reliable transportation to the VHS. Applicants with knowledge in liberal arts and education are strongly encouraged to apply. The applicant will be required to undergo a background check.

John T. Wilkes Internship

The purpose of the John T. Wilkes internship is to give a student of history a meaningful work experience in a museum setting. The internship will expose the student to various aspects of historical research and interpretation and allow him or her to interact with the society’s varied constituencies. The opportunity brings with it an introduction to best practices in the field of public history and museum education. The application deadline for this internship has passed.
