Docent and Volunteer Program

Volunteering at the Virginia Historical Society is a great way to learn more about history while helping to preserve the past. Meeting new people, learning and sharing information, and making a real contribution to the society are just a few of the benefits volunteers can receive for their time and effort.

Volunteer positions are open to all individuals who meet the qualifications outlined below, without regard to race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age, or disability.

The Virginia Historical Society does not accept court-mandated volunteers.


  • Volunteers must be friendly, outgoing, enjoy working with the public, and have an interest in Virginia history.


  • Volunteers can work with visitors or behind the scenes.


  • All volunteer opportunities are available Monday through Friday between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.


  • Volunteers work at the Virginia Historical Society and Virginia House.

Internship Program

Are you looking for an internship position? Whether you are interested in museum collections, public relations, or education, the Virginia Historical Society is a great place to learn about the different skills necessary to work in a museum. All interns must be at least eighteen years old. Fill out our VHS internship application form.

Please note:  All internship positions have been filled for Spring 2017.  Summer internships will be posted in May
