Virginia Magazine of History and Biography

VMHBEstablished in 1893, the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, the quarterly journal of the Virginia Historical Society, publishes articles and book reviews on Virginia and southern history.

Copies of current and past issues of the VMHB are available from the museum shop for $2.00 each, plus $8.95 shipping and handling. Please note: Issues are not available for purchase online, though e-mail inquiries are welcome.

Past issues of the VMHB are available online, with a three-year moving wall, for subscribers of JSTOR's Arts & Sciences V series.

For a fee, the society offers its members online access to the magazine through JSTOR. The cost of this additional service is an annual fee of $40 (not tax deductible).  Please allow up to 10 days for your new JSTOR account to be activated.  Purchase a subscription today or contact Matt Weber at 804.342.9658 or mweber@vahistorical.org for more information.

Want to receive the VMHB in your INBOX instead of your mailbox?

A digital version of the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography is now available to VHS members.

Each issue is:

  • Delivered by e-mail
  • Searchable
  • Viewable on phones, tablets, and desktops
  • Environmentally friendly
  • A way to help reduce operating costs so more of our expenditures go directly to core-mission programming and services

If you are a member and would like to receive the digital VMHB instead of the printed magazine, please contact Heather Oertly, Member Services Officer, at hoertly@vahistorical.org.
